Youth Pledge Day and IWANI:
A collaboration to save coral reefs

Planting hope beneath the waves, together with Indonesia Biru Foundation and Seven Secrets Resort.

On October 28th, Indonesia celebrates Youth Pledge Day; a moment that honors unity, courage, and commitment to a shared future. This year, IWANI turned that spirit into action through a coral reef restoration event in collaboration with the Indonesia Biru Foundation (IBF) and Seven Secrets Resort Lombok. Our mission: to restore coral ecosystems, nurture marine biodiversity, and remind everyone that youth-led change can begin right where we stand or dive.

Opening ceremony: voices of purpose

The event began with an uplifting opening ceremony. Speeches from the Head of IBF, the General Manager of Seven Secrets Lombok, and the CEO of IWANI set the tone for the day. Each speaker shared the same message: coral reefs are more than natural beauty, they are living systems that sustain ocean life and coastal communities alike.

Coral Reef Education

Learning beneath the surface

Before planting, participants joined an educational session led by IBF’s marine experts. We learned about the history of coral reefs, their essential role in maintaining marine balance, and the challenges they face from pollution, warming seas, and destructive fishing.

The session reminded us that education is the first step to conservation, awareness fuels action.

Coral planting: three methods, one goal

Armed with new knowledge and guided by IBF’s specialists, we headed into the turquoise waters to begin coral planting. Three different restoration techniques were
used:

  1. Ceramic Frameworks: eco-friendly ceramic bases that provide solid ground for coral fragments to grow.
  2. MARRS (Mars Accelerated Coral Reef Restoration System): spider-like metal structures that accelerate coral growth and stabilize damaged reefs.
  3. Rope Method: corals tied to suspended ropes, allowing them to develop naturally before being relocated to the reef.

Each method symbolized innovation and care, combining science, teamwork, and a shared love for the ocean.

Lunch, laughter, and snorkeling

After the planting, participants gathered at Seven Secrets Lombok for a well-deserved lunch. The hotel’s locally inspired dishes made the moment warm and memorable, a reminder that sustainability also means community and connection. The day ended with snorkeling, where we could admire the underwater life we had just helped protect. Swimming among vibrant fish and growing corals, we saw the impact of our collective effort in real time.

A shared commitment to the future

This event was more than a collaboration, it was a promise. A promise that even small, youth-led actions can protect what matters most.

At IWANI, we believe that sustainability begins with awareness and grows through collaboration. Together with IBF and Seven Secrets Lombok, we are proud to play a small role in restoring the reefs that sustain our island.
